Every year on 12th October people with arthritis from around the World join together to raise awareness of arthritis, a disease that affects millions of individuals across the globe. The aims of World Arthritis Day are: To raise awareness of arthritis in all its forms among the medical community, people with arthritis and the general public To influence public policy by making decision-makers aware of the burden of arthritis and the steps which can be taken to ease it To ensure all people with arthritis and their caregivers are aware of the vast support network available to them
	Do you know what ARTHRITIS is?
	We have been provided with bones to provide frame work, support and protection to vital organs. Similarly, we have been provided with several small and big joints to facilitate mobility for different functions. For this, joints have been provided with specific arrangement for smooth functioning. For various reasons, in many individuals, joints get inflamed .causing immense pain and stiffness. This development is called Arthritis.
TYPES OF ARTHRITIS: Depending on the cause behind inflammation of joints involved, there are three major types of arthritis, Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis Gouty Arthritis or Gout Osteoarthritis : Both men and women suffer from this. Prevalent in middle aged people, normally weight bearing joints are affected. It is called a degenerative disease, it develops because of erosion of cartilage, capping hard bone ends within a joint, prior to which the lubricating fluid (synovial fluid) within the joint, undergoes degeneration. In advance cases of osteoarthritis, even hard bones undergo erosion after losing protective cover of cartilaginous cap. Rheumatoid Arthritis : In some individuals the immune system reacts to some cells in joints in question, assuming them to be foreign- bodies, leading to inflammation of the joints. Therefore it is called an Auto-immune disease. It normally affects small joints in both men and women. Night pains and morning stiffness are the main features of rheumatoid arthritis. Gouty- Arthritis (Gout) : In this case, the affected joints get inflamed due to deposition of crystals of uric acid salts when uric acid levels in blood goes up, much above the normal level.
